Andy Firth: Rangers sign former Liverpool goalkeeper on 18-month deal
Rangers have signed goalkeeper Andy Firth from Barrow, the Scottish Premiership club have confirmed.Firth, 22, has linked up with Gers just six months after joining the National League side from Liverpool, ending a lengthy association with the Anfield club having joined as an Under-11.He has penned an 18-month deal with Rangers having undergone a medical on Thursday.“Rangers Football Club can today confirm the signing of goalkeeper Andy Firth on an 18-month deal, subject to international clearance,” a statement read.Firth said: “Its been a long couple of days while its all been in the pipeline, but Im just delighted to join a club of this stature. It really is a dream come true.“It was complete shock when I got the call from my agent. It was a bit of a weird one as it wasnt what I expected when I was playing for Barrow, but when an opportunity comes like this its impossible to say no.”During his time at Liverpool Firth worked under Steven Gerrard, the Rangers manager, who was installed as academy coach upon his retirement from the playing side of the game.Firth admitted the chance to reunite with Gerrard played a big part in him deciding to leave Barrow after just six months.“Thats the massive thing,” Firth said of working with Gerrard, “he was my idol growing up. “Im a big Liverpool fan so to get the call from someone like him and for him to ask me to come up here, it was just the easiest decision Ive had to make in football.“A lot of people say dont meet your idols because you wont be as happy as you want to be, but the first time I met him when I was 16 training at Melwood he was the first person to come over and look after me and make sure I was alright.“Thats just carried on ever since and when he came back to coach and the bits I did with him, it was easy for me to motivate myself because I just want to impress my idol. Thankfully, the hard work has paid off.”As well as Gerrard, Firth will link up with others familiar to him due to their Liverpool connections, with Jordan Rossiter and Jon Flanagan on Rangers’ books, along with Ryan Kent, who is currently on loan at Ibrox from the Premier League leaders.Furthermore, technical coach Tom Culshaw and head of performance Jordan Milson joined Rangers from Liverpool upon Gerrard’s appointment as manager last year, as well as Michael Beale, the first-team coach, who congratulated Firth for his move on social media website Twitter.Firth is expected to battle with Allan McGregor and Wes Foderingham for the No.1 jersey. McGregor has been Gerrard’s first-choice glovesman this season since being re-signed by Gers last summer on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract with Hull City.
